Celebrating Sinhala and Tamil New Year in Auckland

A Proud Moment for Southern Ferns Education

On 19 April 2026, Auckland came alive with the colours, sounds, and traditions of Sri Lanka as our community gathered near Sri Lankaramaya for Nawa Awurudu Udanaya 2026 — a grand celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Southern Ferns Education Ltd was honoured to stand as the Gold Sponsor of this prestigious event, and the day delivered far beyond what anyone had imagined — a true taste of home, thousands of kilometres from Sri Lanka.

Graced by the Prime Minister of New Zealand

The celebration was made even more memorable by the presence of the Rt Hon Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand. His attendance was a meaningful recognition of the Sri Lankan community’s contribution to New Zealand’s cultural fabric and reflected the strong bond between our two nations.

A Day Full of Tradition, Joy, and Togetherness

For many in our community — especially students who are far from home — the New Year is more than a date on the calendar. It is family, ritual, food, and memory. This year’s event recreated all of it.

The day featured:

  • Traditional Avurudu games that brought back childhood memories
  • Cultural rituals marking the auspicious times of the New Year
  • Live music, dance, and entertainment celebrating Sri Lankan heritage
  • Authentic Sri Lankan food with kavum, kokis, aluwa, and other festive favourites
  • A vibrant community gathering of families, students, and friends

The energy across the grounds was unmistakable — laughter, drums, the smell of festive sweets, and the sight of families coming together in traditional dress.

Why We Sponsored This Event

As an education consultancy that supports Sri Lankan students and families on their journey to New Zealand, we understand how important cultural connection is during the transition to a new country.

Sponsoring Nawa Awurudu Udanaya 2026 was not just a brand decision — it was a commitment to the students and families who trust us with one of the most important moves of their lives.

Being Gold Sponsor allowed us to:

  • Stand alongside the wider Sri Lankan community in New Zealand
  • Give our student community a true taste of home
  • Strengthen the support network that makes settling into New Zealand easier
